Following the sad demise of a much loved wife and mother John Mc Arthur seeks solace from Molly, their young irish nanny, amidst misunderstanding from his eldest daughter Mary. Four year old Henry, a sensitive child, finds it difficult to understand why his mother is not coming back and gains comfort in saying his prayers beside the grandfather clock where he is certain that his mother can see and hear him as he talks to her each night. Two year old Catherine, quite unaware of the reason why everyone is sad as they deal with the situation they find themselves in, retreats into the background with her much loved cat. Elizabeth, the baby at the centre of the whole sad affair shows early signs of becoming a determined young child, whose ability to cope under hardship as she grows up in a world where she is expected to hold the farm together while her father’s health deteriorates, as the district says goodbye to it’s young men when they leave for a war which they believe will end before Christmas, while the lighthouse sheds its light across the bay.
